Start with a working Aquarium
The fastest useful first session in Net a Fish is not about chasing the rarest catch immediately. Follow the Dock tutorial, throw your Fishing Net into the water, keep enough fish to start your Aquarium, and turn the remaining catches into cash for upgrades. The netting action is mostly automatic, but the result is still affected by RNG, your Net, and Fishing upgrades.
Your first target is a stable income setup: a net that can keep catching, an Aquarium with a worthwhile fish inside, and enough cash to improve the bottleneck you can actually feel. Once those pieces are working, you can add duplicate-fish processing, pursue rarer fish, and prepare for Rebirth rather than spending your first cash on every available option.

How a catch becomes progression
Net a Fish uses a repeatable progression cycle. You begin with a throw, wait for the automatic catch result, then decide whether each fish is more useful in your Aquarium, as a sale, or as part of collection progress. Cash from sales and Aquarium income returns to the upgrade menus, where it improves the next catch and the income that follows it.
This is a choice-driven cycle rather than a fixed sequence with one correct destination. Keep a high-value or useful fish for your Aquarium, sell fish you do not need, and use repeated fish with the Fisherman and Fish Cooler when those systems are available. New fish also advance your Index and can provide one-time cash and Mutation rewards.
Process duplicate fish for stronger Aquarium income
This moment supports the duplicate-fish step by showing Fisherman collection and Fish Cooler fusion before placing the improved fish in the Aquarium.
As your collection and cash meet the current requirement, Rebirth becomes the next state change. Rebirth resets part of your progress, raises your Cash Multiplier, opens additional content, and gives 3 Skill Points. Afterward, the Skill Tree lets you strengthen areas such as Net, Luck, Fortune, or Crew and Dock before you rebuild your next run.
The systems that matter first
These are the systems to understand before buying upgrades at random:
- Fishing Net: Your starting tool automatically throws and catches fish. Its level affects capacity, reach, and the fish rarities you can pursue, while RNG still influences each result.
- Aquarium: Place fish here to create steady cash over time. A high-value or Fish Cooler-fused fish is usually a better long-term resident than a catch you can easily replace.
- Fishing upgrades: The Fishing menu can improve Luck, Catch Speed, Net Size, and related capture efficiency. Check these alongside direct Net upgrades instead of assuming the largest Net purchase is always best.
- Market upgrades: These improve cash generation and work with Aquarium income. They matter when your next upgrade is gated by money rather than by access to a new catch tier.
- Fisherman: This Dock helper collects duplicate versions of fish you already own. Upgrade it when you want passive duplicate supply without replacing your main netting activity.
- Fish Cooler: Give it duplicate fish to perform Fish Fusion and produce a more valuable result. Put the improved fish in your Aquarium when your priority is stronger passive income.
- Spear Gun and Bait: The Spear Gun helps catch fish above Common rarity and supports the pursuit of the rarest fish. Bait provides temporary passive bonuses, although some Bait is gated by Rebirth and its best use depends on your target.
- Index, Rebirth, and Skill Tree: The Index tracks newly discovered fish and can reward progress. Rebirth trades part of your current progress for a stronger multiplier, new access, and 3 Skill Points; spend those points in the Skill Tree after the reset.
Upgrade the Spear Gun for rare-fish collection
This moment supports the rare-fish collection section by showing the Spear Gun upgrade and its role in catching fish beyond the basic Net.
Your first dock-to-upgrade run
Use this sequence to turn the tutorial into a complete first progression loop:
- Follow the Dock tutorial. Start with the Fishing Net and use the tutorial’s water target. Do not worry if the first result is ordinary; the opening goal is to establish the capture-and-cash flow.
- Throw the net and wait for the result. The catch process is mainly automatic. Let the result resolve, then check what fish you received rather than treating every throw as an immediate upgrade.
- Keep one useful fish for the Aquarium. Place a worthwhile catch in your Aquarium so it can generate cash over time. If a fish is valuable but not useful to your current collection, compare its immediate sale value with the income you need to keep progressing.
- Sell or retain the next catches deliberately. Sell fish you do not need for the Index, Aquarium, or future Fusion. Retain new discoveries when possible so your Index can advance and its one-time rewards can help fund the next purchase.
- Open the upgrade menus after income begins. Check the Nets upgrade path,
Fishing, andMarkettogether. Improve the stat currently limiting you: Net access or capacity, capture speed and luck, or the cash return that pays for the next upgrade. - Check the Dock for duplicate processing. Once Fisherman and Fish Cooler are available, let the Fisherman gather duplicates and use the Cooler to fuse them. A fused fish is a candidate for the Aquarium when you are building passive income.
- Use the Spear Gun for a collection goal. When you are ready to move beyond ordinary catches, upgrade the Spear Gun and use suitable Bait if available. This is the point to pursue higher-rarity fish rather than expecting the basic Net to complete the whole Index.

- Verify the next Rebirth requirement before committing. Check the current fish-count and cash requirements in the Rebirth guide and game. Finish any valuable sale, Aquarium placement, or upgrade that you need first, because Rebirth resets part of your progress.
- Rebirth, then spend the Skill Points. After the reset, collect the 3 Skill Points and assign them in the Skill Tree. Choose a branch that supports your next goal, such as Net and Luck for catching or Fortune and Crew and Dock for broader progression.
The checkpoint at the end is not simply “press Rebirth.” It is confirming that your best fish, available cash, and current upgrades have been handled first. That small check prevents a reset from discarding progress you still needed for the next cycle.
Priorities and recovery choices
Prioritize progression in this order:
- Get an Aquarium income source running. Without a displayed fish, you lose the most reliable early cash path.
- Fix the current capture bottleneck. Buy a Net upgrade when capacity, reach, or rarity access is limiting you; buy Fishing upgrades when speed, Luck, or Net Size is the actual problem.
- Use cash upgrades that support the next goal. Market upgrades are useful when income is slow, while Fisherman and Fish Cooler are useful when duplicates are accumulating.
- Add collection tools before rare-fish hunting. Use the Spear Gun and appropriate Bait for higher-rarity targets instead of relying on the basic Net alone.
- Treat Rebirth as a checkpoint. Confirm the current requirements and spend or place anything important before resetting, then use the Skill Points immediately afterward.
If you make a mistake, recover with the matching action:
- You sold a fish you wanted to keep: return to ordinary netting and rebuild the collection; use the Index to identify what still needs to be discovered rather than spending all cash on upgrades.
- You kept only low-value fish in the Aquarium: replace a slot with a stronger catch or a Fish Cooler-fused fish once one is available, then let the improved resident rebuild cash.
- You bought a Net upgrade but catches remain slow: inspect Fishing upgrades for Catch Speed, Luck, and Net Size before buying another Net level.
- You are short on cash for the next purchase: leave the Aquarium running, sell unneeded fish, and consider Market improvements instead of forcing a Rebirth early.
- You rebirthed before preparing: rebuild with the new Cash Multiplier, spend the 3 Skill Points, and focus the next cycle on the requirement that caused the earlier reset.
- You cannot find the rare fish you want: switch from basic-net farming to the Spear Gun and review Bait and the current in-game requirements; exact unlock gates can vary by progression.
First-time Net a Fish questions
Should I sell every fish I catch at the start?
No. Keep a useful fish for the Aquarium and retain new discoveries when you want Index progress. Sell catches you do not need for income, but compare the immediate cash with the value of a stronger Aquarium resident.
What should I upgrade when my catches feel slow?
Check the Fishing menu as well as the Net menu. Catch Speed, Luck, and Net Size can address a slow or inconsistent capture rate, while a Net upgrade is more appropriate when capacity, reach, or rarity access is the limiting factor.
Can the basic Fishing Net catch every rare fish?
You should not rely on it for the full collection. The Spear Gun is important for fish above Common rarity and for pursuing the rarest fish, with Bait providing additional temporary support when its requirements are met.
What must I do immediately after Rebirth?
Open the Skill Tree and spend the 3 Skill Points you received. Pick a branch that matches the next run, such as Net or Luck for capture progress, or Fortune and Crew and Dock for broader growth.
